Certainly the best part of the movie one of many land runs into Oklahoma and for people who don’t know many land runs were for unassigned lands so don’t lump all of us into land grabbers, my family came in the Run of 1889 and damn proud if it.

Yankees from OK pretending to be cowboys…what a joke! These land runners were all defeated bankers and rejects who couldn’t hack it in the east, so they had to loot land from Indians that nobody else in America would use.

    john williams is a genius

@robhere1982, I agree. Far and Away might have been an uneven movie, but it had moments of pure movie magic, not the least of which was this epic scene.

1:13 oh PETA is not gonna like that

I think it means we know how to take care of business. Get an okie around a problem, and we’ll get it taken care of by hook or by crook. That’s the sooner spirit.

of course. totally fun to race on a horse like that.

Firstly, John Williams really does justice to this amazing scene but even more so, this is before crap, lazy CGI took the magic out of movies. This scene is up there with the truck case from ‘Raiders of the Los Ark’ or Buffalo hunt from ‘Dances with Wolves’. I miss old fashioned movies like these that where romantic, had old school action & full of feel good vibes. This will always be miles ahead of anything a computer will ever ‘create’. You’ll never, ever see anything like this scene again.

    tom was so handsome.

Lol, that would have been funny to witness.
They love to flatter themselves with the casting though.
In real life a woman like Nicole would have been trampled to death. The rough scary women would have made it.

John Williams did such a good job on the music for this scene!

Do horses at full gallop ever stick their necks straight out?

For anyone who ever wondered what a “Sooner” might be, at the end of this scene Shannon’s parents are “Sooners”; they snuck in before noon and picked out the best land and pretended to have run the race to get there first. Nowadays we like to think it just means we’re “progressive” – Carl, Oklahoma City

    cj,
Why am I not in the least bit surprised that you mentioned Remax? :) )

  • cjthemusicman

    I think I’d rather walk into a Remax office…..

    JK! Amazing scene!

    Gator,
Thanks so much for sharing this with me. I actually WAS able to spot you once you told me the scene times. I’m sure that was a very special time for you; how fun and interesting that must have been!

Thanks for loading this scene. My old cavalry reenactment unit took part (as civilians) in the filming of this scene back in 1991 at Pryor Creek Montana. Took 2 weeks to film – most of the footage wound up on the cutting room floor. Over 1000 riders and around 250 wagons took part in this scene. Nothing compares to riding at a dead run over rough ground among hundreds of galloping horses for a rush – You just hang on and hope your horse doesn’t take a tumble. 5 stars.
